CIE MIDTERM MEETING VIENNA, AUSTRIA 2025

We are excited to invite you to Vienna, renowned for its cultural richness and recognized as one of world’s foremost hubs of musical excellence, to join us in the CIE’s Midterm Meeting 2025!

The CIE Midterm Meeting features the Scientific Conference CIE 2025, to be held from July 7-9, 2025. This three-day conference brings together the CIE community and its stakeholders to advance the science of light and lighting, as well as the technical and organizational work of the CIE. The scientific conference will be preceded by the CIE General Assembly and other administrative meetings from June 4-6, 2025, and followed by the CIE Division and Technical Committee (TC) meetings on July 10th and 11th, 2025.

At the upcoming scientific conference, all six Divisions will discuss crucial topics, including the impacts of the digital age and artificial intelligence on lighting, controls, and measurement. Discussions will also explore the application of cone fundamentals in understanding light perception, alongside addressing the health impacts of temporally modulated light and glare, evaluation of virtual and augmented reality displays, and efforts to minimize obtrusive light and sky glow, reflecting CIE's global commitment to advancing light and lighting technologies.

CIE AT THE IEEE SUSTAINABLE SMART LIGHTING WORLD CONFERENCE (LS2024)

CIE is excited to announce its participation in the upcoming IEEE Sustainable Smart Lighting World Conference (LS2024), scheduled to be held at Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands, from November 12-14, 2024.

 

Representing CIE at this conference will be Peter Thorns, CIE VP of Standards, and Head of the Strategic Lighting Applications at Thorn Lighting Ltd, UK.

 

Peter Thorns has worked in Thorn Lighting and Zumtobel Group since 1985, holding various roles including electronics research and development, manufacturing, software development, photometry, optical design, and lighting applications. He is the current Vice-President of Standards for the CIE, chair of ISO/TC 274, and is involved in numerous CEN and BSI committees. He is also active in the UK Lighting Industry Association and LightingEurope.

 

Mr. Thorns will deliver a presentation titled "V(λ) – Past and Future." This talk will explore the V(λ) spectral luminous efficiency function, which forms the foundation of our lighting units, photometry, and measurement equipment. Celebrating its 100th anniversary, the presentation will delve into the history of this fundamental curve, discuss some of its challenges, and consider potential future developments.


The Conference will be held during the GLOW Light Festival in Eindhoven and will coincide with the ILIAD outreach event of the Intelligent Lighting Institute.

CIE AT THE IUPB-MEPSA 18TH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON PHOTOBIOLOGY

CIE is delighted to announce its participation in the upcoming IUPB-MEPSA 18th International Congress on Photobiology, which will take place in Perth, Australia from August 25th to August 30th, 2024. The congress venue is the hotel Pan Pacific, Perth.

 

This joint congress in the City of Light will provide a comprehensive international forum for the dissemination of the most recent research and technological developments in the photobiological sciences and in photomedicine. It will offer a unique opportunity to present the latest breakthroughs, exchange new ideas, and establish global and far-reaching collaborations.

 

Representing CIE at this distinguished gathering will be Tony Bergen, VP Technical and Chair of the Technical Management Board of CIE. Mr. Bergen is scheduled to deliver two presentations as part of the Ocular Photobiology symposium: "Flicker and other effects of Temporal Light Modulation (TLM)" and "The right light at the right time in the right place: Optimising lighting to promote well-being."

CIE AT THE SHANGHAI INTERNATIONAL LIGHT FESTIVAL

Shanghai is set to dazzle as its first-ever International Illumination Festival "Travel in Light - Exploring the Realm of Time and Space, Blooming the Beauty of Light and Shadow" will open in September, bringing a month-long celebration of urban light and cultural art to the city from Sept 19 to Oct 18, 2024. The Shanghai Exhibition Center will host various activities from September 19 to September 27, starting with the Opening Ceremony on September 19 at 7:30 PM (Beijing time) and a Professional Audience Day on September 20. From September 21 to September 27, the events will be open to the general public.

CCPR-CIE EXPERT WORKSHOP AT THE BIPM: CELEBRATING THE CENTENNIAL OF THE V(λ) SPECTRAL LUMINOUS EFFICIENCY FUNCTION

The CCPR-CIE Expert Workshop, “100 Years of V(λ) and the Future of Photometry" took place on June 3rd, 2024, at the prestigious Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) in Sèvres, France. This event marked a significant milestone — the centennial of the V(λ) spectral luminous efficiency function.

The workshop brought together an incredible assembly of researchers, engineers, and industry leaders who engaged in insightful discussions about the history, current trends, and future advancements in photometry and colorimetry. The presentations were both impactful and thought-provoking, offering a comprehensive look at the evolution and future of the field.

 

Later this year, we will be releasing a celebratory V(λ) publication, featuring insightful essays and a detailed historical record that chronicles the evolution and impact of V(λ) over the past 100 years.

A huge thank you to BIPM, their director Mr. Martin Milton and CCPR for their exceptional organization and dedication in making this event a success. Thanks also to Dr. Joële Viallon for her on-site arrangements, and to Dr. Yoshi Ohno for chairing the committee.

 

CIE MEETINGS IN PARIS

CIE is pleased to report the success of its recent meetings in Paris, where Dr. Jennifer Veitch and Dr. Diana Wernisch had the opportunity to engage with several esteemed organizations based in France. These meetings included productive discussions with representatives from the International Science Council (ISC), International Energy Agency (IEA), International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA), CIE NC FRANCE / The Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment (CSTB), International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM), and Consultative Committee for Photometry and Radiometry (CCPR).

 

The interactions were constructive, fostering a strong foundation for future collaborations and joint initiatives. The meetings underscored a shared commitment to enhancing global standards and promoting scientific excellence. CIE looks forward to building on these positive outcomes and working closely with these organizations to drive forward important projects and initiatives that will benefit the global community.

WINNERS OF THE V(λ) ART CONTEST

CIE is thrilled to reveal the winners of the V(λ) Art Contest “Light up your Inner Muse: Celebration 100 years of V(λ) with the art of light,” in the following three categories: English Poems, French Poems and Visual Art.

This contest celebrated the intersection of art and science, challenging participants to create artistic contributions in the form of poems or visual art inspired by the V(λ) function. The creativity and talent displayed were truly inspiring, and overall we received 70 submission from 16 countries!

The III International Scientific and Technical Conference "Light in Museum" was held at the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg from April 22-24, 2024.

 

Organized by CIE NC Russia and the State Hermitage Museum, the conference invited specialists and experts in museum lighting to participate.

 

During the event, an online welcome speech was given by Dr. Diana Wernisch, CIE Secretary General.

The conference focused on addressing current issues concerning light and lighting in museums, restoration workshops, and storage facilities, serving as a platform for productive dialogue among professionals in these fields.

CIE AT THE WHO 2024 INTERNATIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING ON NON-IONIZING RADIATION

The WHO's International Advisory Committee meeting on Non-Ionizing Radiation (IAC on NIR) was held from June 11-13, 2024, at the WHO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

 

The IAC on NIR is a key component of the WHO's efforts to address and manage health risks associated with non-ionizing radiation which includes electromagnetic fields from sources such as mobile phones, power lines, and various household appliances. These activities aim to protect public health by minimizing harmful exposure to non-ionizing radiation and promoting safer technologies and practices​.

 

We are proud to announce that CIE Past President Peter Blattner presented a brief talk on CIE's recent and upcoming activities relevant to the WHO’s work and mandate.

 

CIE was honored to contribute to health-related topics and provide valuable insights on non-ionizing radiation, furthering understanding and standards related to its impact on health.
